What is Viagra?

Viagra is a small, blue, easy-to-use pill for erectile dysfunction (ED). Sildenafil, Viagra's active ingredient, works by relaxing blood vessels, helping blood flow more easily to the penis. It's a pill you take as needed, and it begins to work within 30–60 minutes of taking it. A Viagra pill lasts up to four hours (giving you plenty of leeway to avoid rushing things).

Viagra tablets are known for their distinctive blue, diamond-shaped appearance.

Is there a generic Viagra?

Yes. There is a generic version of Viagra called sildenafil. So, what does that mean? Pfizer produces Viagra exclusively, but many different companies produce sildenafil (including Pfizer, by the way). Sildenafil tablets don't have a distinctive appearance, and often just look like another conventional round white pill. But don't let the less exciting appearance fool you. Sildenafil, or generic Viagra, comes in the same doses as Original Viagra and works exactly the same way. The key difference is the price: Original Viagra costs more than generic Viagra because it's a brand name.

We have both versions, Generic Viagra and Original Viagra, so you can choose the option that best suits your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions: Viagra

Want to know something specific about Viagra? Check out our information below, or ask our experts a question if you can't find what you're looking for.

How effective is Viagra?

Varies depending on dose. In clinical trials:

  • 62% of men using the 25mg dose of Viagra reported better erections;
  • 74% of men who took the 50mg dose reported better erections;
  • 82% of men who took the 100mg dose reported better erections.

This doesn't mean you should immediately take 100 mg. Yes, it's stronger, but it doesn't guarantee better performance and is more likely to cause side effects. When you and your doctor are choosing a dose, you should opt for the lowest effective dose.

If you take Viagra and it doesn't work as well as you expected, let us know. Our specialist can discuss other doses or treatments that may work better for you, and you can switch at any time.

Can women take Viagra?

This may seem obvious, but Viagra is an erectile dysfunction medication, so it won't work if you don't have a penis. There's a medication called Addyi (flibanserin) that's nicknamed "pink Viagra" or "female Viagra" because it treats low libido in women (hypoactive sexual desire disorder). But this drug is in no way similar to sildenafil and works very differently. Viagra should never be taken by women or anyone without erectile dysfunction.

What do I need to know when buying Viagra online?

Viagra, Generic Viagra, Sildenafil, and all other ED pills are available only with a prescription in Portugal. They cannot be offered by any vendor other than registered and licensed pharmacies, and when pharmacies offer these treatments, they must conduct checks (consultations) to ensure their safety. Therefore, before purchasing Viagra online, make sure the website you visit is trustworthy and that you are using the services of licensed professionals.

When you have online consultations about Viagra or ED treatment, please tell us about any health conditions you have or any other medications you're taking. This will help our specialists find a treatment that's safe for you.

Generic Viagra is just a cheaper version of the original Viagra.

Generic Viagra is the generic name for Viagra. Because it's an unbranded medication, it typically has a lower price. There's really not much difference between Generic Viagra and Viagra other than the appearance of the pills, the packaging they come in, the non-active ingredients, and the price. With Viagra, you get the iconic blue diamond-shaped pill and the brand-name box. With Generic Viagra, you're more likely to get a standard white, round pill, and the box may be a little more basic. Since they are bioequivalent versions, they work the same way in the body.

This means that generic Viagra will not be more or less effective than Viagra. But there are many men who buy Viagra because they like the brand name. So, in answer to the question: is generic Viagra just a cheaper version of Viagra? Yes, usually.

Is Viagra the best pill for ED?

Not always. Viagra is the most well-known ED pill. But there are alternatives to Viagra for men who find it doesn't work as well. Cialis (tadalafil) is a pill that has the same effect but lasts for up to 36 hours, Spedra (avanafil) has an average response time of 15 minutes, and Levitra (vardenafil) is a more potent medication and is believed to be less likely to cause side effects.

There's no consensus on which of these pills is officially "best," but Viagra and generic Viagra are the first choice for men with ED because they're the easiest to find (and the generic version of Viagra is cheap).

We've taken all four so you have plenty of options if you try one and it doesn't work.

How safe is Viagra?

Viagra is generally considered low-risk. Some men experience side effects from Viagra, but most of the time, these are mild and disappear after a few uses. Headache is the most common, and a stuffy nose and facial flushing are also quite common.

Some men aren't bothered by these side effects, and consider signs like facial flushing reassuring because it helps them know the medication is working. Taking acetaminophen and drinking plenty of water can help with a headache if Viagra is still working well.

The most harmful side effects tend to be uncommon or rare. But it's important to know what they are so you can get help if needed. So, be sure to read the leaflet.

It's not as safe if you take it while using recreational drugs like poppers, and you shouldn't use Viagra if you're taking a type of medication called nitrates. Again, read the leaflet and tell us about any medications you're taking.

We know things can change. So, if you're enrolled in ED treatment and start any new medications or experience any changes in your health, let us know. Our specialists can discuss options with you and adjust your treatment accordingly.

What is Viagra Connect?

Viagra Connect is a repackaged version of Viagra, available specifically in the UK. It is currently not available in Portugal.

It's manufactured by Pfizer and is only available in one dose: 50 mg. Clinically speaking, they're the same medication. The main difference between Viagra and Viagra Connect is that the latter is available over-the-counter in the UK and doesn't require a prescription.

Viagra and alcohol: what are the rules?

Having just one or two alcoholic drinks while taking Viagra probably won't make much difference. Larger amounts of alcohol are a different story. Drinking heavily can make it harder to get an erection, and if you do so while taking Viagra, there's a significant chance it won't work as well. Therefore, it's a good idea to drink in moderation.

What does Viagra do?

In short, Viagra's active ingredient, Sildenafil, dilates the blood vessels at the entrance of the penis. This helps blood flow more easily to your penis, helping you achieve firmer, longer-lasting erections.

So let's delve a little deeper into erections. When a man becomes aroused, the brain sends signals to the body telling the vessels supplying the penis to open. This allows blood to flow into the penis and fills a tissue called the corpora cavernosa. It's a bit like a sponge, and as blood flows into it, it fills and hardens—and that's what gives you an erection. At the same time, the brain tells other vessels near the penis to tighten, keeping blood in the spongy tissue—and this is what makes an erection last.

When men experience ED, blood can't flow to the penis. This may be because the signals that tell blood vessels to open aren't working properly, or because blood isn't circulating properly throughout the body.

Sildenafil is called a PDE5 inhibitor because it blocks an enzyme (PDE5) that narrows blood vessels. By inhibiting this enzyme, the drug allows better blood flow to the penis, which means better erections.
